Helping Fearful & Anxious Dogs Build Confidence

Specialized dog training for fearful, anxious, shy, and under-socialized dogs throughout the East Valley.

Living with a fearful or anxious dog can be challenging.

You may find yourself avoiding certain situations, worrying about how your dog will react, or wondering what you can do to help them feel more comfortable in the world.

At Side by Side Dog Training, we take the time to understand the individual dog behind the behavior and develop a training approach designed around their needs.

With more than 17 years of hands-on rescue experience, Sherry has a particular passion for helping dogs who need patience, understanding, and support.

When Your Dog's World Feels Overwhelming

Maybe your dog hides when someone comes to the door.

Maybe walks have become stressful because your dog reacts to people or other dogs.

Maybe your rescue dog is struggling to adjust to their new home.

Or maybe you've tried training before, but your dog still seems nervous, overwhelmed, or unsure.

You aren't alone—and your dog isn't broken.

Fear and anxiety can affect dogs in many different ways, and understanding what your dog is communicating is an important first step toward helping them.

Does Your Dog Struggle With Fear or Anxiety?

You may have found us because your dog:

Hides, or retreat

Your dog avoids people, situations, or environments that make them uncomfortable.

Freeze or shut down

Instead of reacting outwardly, your dog may become very still or disengaged.

Bark or Growl

Vocal behavior can be a dog's way of communicating that they're uncomfortable or overwhelmed.

Lunge or React

Some fearful dogs respond to their triggers by moving toward them rather than away.

Avoid people or dogs

Your dog may struggle with greeting, visitors, or encounters with other dogs.

Struggle in new environments

New places, sounds, surfaces, or experiences may be difficult.

Rescue dogs

A new rescue may need additional time and support while adjusting to a completely different life.

Lack confidence

Some dogs simply haven't developed the confidence they need to navigate everyday situations comfortably.

If any of these sound familiar, we'd love to learn more about your dog.

Fear Doesn't Always Look Like Fear

When people hear "fearful dog," they often imagine a dog hiding in the corner.

But fear can look very different from one dog to another.

It can look like barking.

Growling.

Lunging.

Pulling away.

Freezing.

Trying to escape.

Avoiding eye contact.

Or completely shutting down.

Sometimes behavior that appears aggressive is actually a dog's way of communicating:

"I'm uncomfortable. I don't know what to do."

Understanding what's behind the behavior can change the way we approach training.

Experience That Goes Beyond Obedience

Fear and anxiety aren't simply obedience problems.

That's why experience matters.

With more than 17 years of hands-on rescue experience, Sherry has worked with dogs from many different backgrounds, including dogs who are fearful, shy, anxious, under-socialized, and struggling to trust.

That experience has shaped the way she approaches training.

Rather than looking only at what a dog is doing, she takes the time to understand why the behavior may be happening and what the dog needs in order to move forward.

The goal isn't to force a fearful dog to stop being afraid.

It's to help the dog develop communication, confidence, and practical skills while giving their person the tools to continue supporting them.

Training Begins With Understanding

Every dog has a story.

Their genetics, experiences, environment, socialization, relationships, and history can all influence how they respond to the world.

That's why we don't believe in treating every dog exactly the same.

We take the time to understand the individual dog, identify the challenges you're facing, and develop a training approach around their needs.

Because the goal isn't simply to make a dog obey.

The goal is to help dogs and their people understand each other.

"Never Walk Alone."

Your dog doesn't have to face their fears alone—and neither do you.

Our Approach to Fear & Anxiety Training

01 — Understand

We start by learning about your dog, their history, behavior, triggers, and environment.

02 — Build Communication

Clear communication helps your dog understand what you're asking and what you expect.

03 — Develop Confidence

We work toward helping your dog become more comfortable navigating situations that previously felt overwhelming.

04 — Practice

Skills need repetition. Training progresses through appropriate practice and increasingly realistic situations.

05 — Bring It Home

You learn how to continue supporting your dog's progress in your everyday environment.

Every dog is different. Training is individualized based on the dog's needs, temperament, history, and goals.

Confidence is Built One Successful Experience at a Time

For a fearful or anxious dog, progress doesn't always look dramatic.

Sometimes it's calmly walking past a stranger.

Sometimes it's entering a new environment.

Sometimes it's allowing someone new into the home.

Sometimes it's staying engaged with their handler instead of shutting down.

Those moments matter.

We focus on helping dogs develop practical skills while building confidence through appropriate experiences.

Small victories can become big changes over time

We Train You, Too.

Your dog may learn new skills during training, but you're the person they'll live with every day.

That's why teaching you how to communicate with your dog is such an important part of the process.

We'll help you learn how to:

  • Recognize your dog's signals

  • Understand potential triggers

  • Communicate clearly

  • Reinforce appropriate behavior

  • Build confidence

  • Practice skills at home

  • Handle everyday situations

  • Continue your dog's progress

The goal isn't for your dog to listen only to the trainer. The goal is for your dog to understand you.

Real Dogs. Real Families. Real Progress.

I highly recommend Side by Side Dog Training. After only 2 sessions, my 100 pound foster dog could be walked with a loose leash. Sherry had unlimited patience with the dog and the handler. I think I needed that vote of confidence more than the dog. This has been a life changing experience and I believe I can take what I’ve learned from Sherry to help other foster dogs. Thank you from the bottom if my heart!
